  • Plot: Shûji Sano and Ken Uehara work in an office for Shin Shaburi. Akito Wada is the kyuji boy. He fetches tea and gets cigarettes and lunch for the workers. His sister is Kinuyo Tanaka. Their father is off looking for a gold mine. Mieko Takamine is Sano's sister, and somehow everyone knows everyone else, and everyone tries to tell everyone else what to do.For someone who has grown used to the fairly formal and rigid families in movies by Ozu, this messy, sprawling community is a confusing and disconcerting mess. It seems ad hoc and not in the least Japanese. Yet in a Japan that was still industrializing, there were a lot of people making their way, forging non-traditional relationships. Uehara feels it right to spol Wada a bit, and to cuff him when he steps out of line, as an older brother might. Wada doesn't seem to resent it.The story on offer in Hiromasa Nomura's movie is just as messy, incoherent and tentative as the relationships. It's more a revelation of character, a courtship of all the individuals.
