Plot: When Mrs. Briggs ordered a very beautiful gown for herself, she did so in the firm belief that her husband would pay for it promptly, and without demur. However, Mr. Briggs was in a rather unpleasant mood, as a result of which he positively refused to pay a cent for the gown. Mrs. Briggs flatly told her husband that she would go home to her mother if he didn't pay for it. Mr. Briggs, unwilling to back down from his position, told her to go ahead. So Mrs. Briggs went. At least, she went as far as the station. When she got there she changed her mind, decided that her husband was a poor, abused angel, and started home again. Meanwhile, Mr. Briggs had come to the conclusion that he was a brute, and that there was no reason why his poor little wife shouldn't have the gown it she wanted it. So he rushed to the station to head her off. He got there just in time to see his wife's train pulling out. So he sadly retraced his steps. Mrs. Briggs was already home. When she heard him coming, she hid herself. Mr. Briggs discovered her suitcase, and realized she had returned. At once an idea suggested itself to him. He wrote a note to the affect that his wife s extravagance had driven him to the awful deed he was contemplating, and shut himself up in his room with a revolver. Shortly afterward, he fired off the revolver. Mrs. Briggs pushed in vain at the locked door. Finally it occurred to her to look over the transom. When, instead of a ghastly corpse, she saw her husband sitting up and laughing. A little while later, Mr. Briggs, considering that he had taught his erring wife enough of a lesson, came out. His wife was not there but there was a note on the hall table which read, "Dear Hubby: I have gone to buy that dress to wear at your funeral."
