His efforts are unsuccessful, to the great annoyance of the rest of the passengers, some of whom have retired, and when asked by one of the passengers why he doesn't take the child to its mother, he sadly informs her that she is "in the baggage coach ahead." This at once arouses the sympathy of his fellow passengers and he proceeds to tell the story of his few short years of happiness. Beginning with his first meeting with his pretty bride, he tells of the springtime wooing, her final acceptance of him and his start for the west where his business calls him, there to build their little home. At last the home is ready; he sends for her, and her supreme joy on entering their home more than compensates for their short separation, they continue supremely happy, a child is born to them, the pride and joy of their little home. Suddenly, one day, a shadow falls across their rosy pathway; the little wife and mother is taken seriously ill and passes away after a very short illness, leaving her husband grief stricken. As we fade back to the Pullman at the end of the story we see that one sympathetic lad has taken charge of the child and, as the man breaks down in his grief, she carefully takes the now-sleeping baby to her stateroom. One by one the other passengers move quietly away in silent sympathy, leaving him alone with his great sorrow.
