  • Plot: Don James, inspired by almost ungovernable wrath, is about to fire upon an innocent man, when a tiny white blossom falls like a snow-flake upon the blue barrel of his revolver. Surprised by this peculiar circumstance, the would-be assassin looks upward toward the tree and in the branches sees again the impish face of "Nan of the Woods," an elf-lie mountain sprite, who has recently flown into his life. A moment later Don discovers that the drifting blossom has saved him from killing his own father, whom he has never seen. Upon Don's return from the city, Nan's father, who is an ignorant and jealous man, has observed a stranger at Mrs. James' home (the wanderer who had fled years before from that fireside returned and had been forgiven). The woodsman jumped at a conclusion, as he himself is in love with the widow, but never asks for an explanation, and intercepting Don, he whispers his suspicions in the ears of that impetuous youth, who upon no other proof than hearsay, trails his own father through the woods and is about to shoot him down. The father, believing his son is avenging his mother's wrongs in connection with his early flight from home under disgraceful circumstances, accepts the defiance of his son. So he takes the weapon that the infuriated young man hands him, exclaiming, "It will be each man for himself when we enter these woods." He quietly empties his own weapon of cartridges and is about to offer himself as a victim, when Nan, who has been playing with her wolves and birds, flees Don. She nimbly runs up a tree and drops the blossom which foils the near tragedy. Her explanation restores happiness, reunites the family, and Nan consents to give up her bare-foot wanderings and her moonlight incantations in the shadowy woods to become Don's bride.
