  • Plot: Mack Sennett produced the Smith Family series to appeal to the middle class audience that was developing. Its normal-looking family to whom odd things happened was a popular series in its day. However, Sennett had a lot of talent on staff and they made visits to the shoots. Here it's Andy Clyde in a long beard as Raymond McKee's rich uncle Dan. He quickly becomes entangled with Carmelita Geraghty, the vamp next door, and her conniving brother Bud Jamison.Although the gags and pratfalls are well performed, the rule at the Smith Family unit was that nothing eve went completely over the top. If Omar the Dog got too boisterous, that's what happened if you stuffed a Great Dane into a suburban house. If Mary Ann Jackson got everything covered in glue, that's what happens when you don't watch the toddler like a hawk. It's sitcom territory, but very well done by skilled professionals in front of and behind the camera. Enjoy.
