  • Plot: Madge Van Zant is a wealthy girl and her father is the owner of a large factory, which employs a number of women and girls. The superintendent of the factory makes a proposition to the owner to cut the wages of all the employees. The owner, being ignorant of the true conditions existing in his factory, allows the superintendent to persuade him to authorize the cut. Tom Jordan, a factory employee, with ideas for the betterment of his fellow workers, goes to the owner and intercedes with him to restore the wages, which were meager enough at best. He enlists the sympathy of Miss Van Zant and she adds her plea to his. The owner promises to reconsider the matter and asks for a few days to think it over. Madge determines to learn conditions in the factory at first hand, and, pretending to go on a visit, she in reality goes to the factory as a poor girl and seeks employment. She learns how the poor live and is much touched by their kindness to her. She attracts the unwelcome attention of the superintendent and is rescued from insult at his hands by Jordan, who, of course, is ignorant of her real identity. The next day both are dismissed from the factory by the superintendent. Madge returns to her home and tells her father of the conditions under which the factory is run. He sends for the superintendent and in the library he meets the heiress. The superintendent is bland and meek and attempts to deny conditions as she has stated them. Suddenly she steps behind the curtain and emerges as the factory girl. The superintendent is dumbfounded. His dismissal follows shortly afterward and the management of the factory is entrusted to Tom Jordan. There is a promise of better times and perhaps the friendship of Madge.
