‘The Women of George Cross Island’ delves into the lives of outstanding women who have contributed to bringing one of humanity’s most dreaded chapters to an end – World War II. It seeks to do justice to the strength, perseverance and intelligence shown by key women who have actively changed the course of this war in an 8-part documentary. Through dramatic reenactments, exclusive interviews, extensive research and the use of rare (and largely unseen) historical footage, photos and other archival material, ‘The Women of George Cross Island’ will resurface stories of women that have been forgotten in the passing of time. The creative documentary will be told by the very last, remaining survivors of WWII, along with historians and researchers who will lend extra power to historical footage and political events of this period. It will examine more closely the personal lives and wartime work of women such as: – Christina Ratcliffe – the cabaret performer turned plotter at the Lascaris War HQ – Other plotters, including the Maltese Anne Rossi and Frances Kane, as well as Jane Hayston who worked alongside Christina – E.A. – A novel discovery emanating from the scriptwriter’s research; a Maltese woman operating as a spy from Vichy-French Tunisia. Hereby being temporarily referred to by her initials. – Meme Turner (nee Cortis) – part of the V.A.D. (Voluntary Aid Detachment), serving as a nurse at the – Mtarfa General Hospital – Mary Ellul – the most renowned of the Air Raid Wardens – Dr Irene Condachi – one of two female doctors serving during the war – Henrietta Chevalier – operating from Rome, saved 4,000 Allied soldiers and Jews – Marie Denaro, Daisy Agius and Josephine Burns de Bono – protagonists at the forefront of women’s issues during the war effort – Mabel Strickland (Times of Malta editor), Winfred Cutajar Beck (journalist) and May Agius (secretary)
