  • Plot: A year ago today 17-year-old SAMANTHA LEWIS went missing on her way home from her best friend Kate's house. PETER MCCARTHY, an independent documentary maker offers the grieving mother CHARLOTTE LEWIS the chance to tell her daughter's story to the camera in hope of finding some resolution to the unanswered questions that have left her and her husband DAVID LEWIS' life on pause ever since Samantha disappeared. Charlotte deeply hopes the documentary will be the fresh start her and David need to be able to close the door on this chapter of their lives and move forward together in putting the loss of their daughter behind them. However with a series of disjointed interview clips Peter instead pieces together the fragmented reality of what remains of this broken and fragile family torn apart by David's obsession to find their daughter, the heated arguments over David's drinking and the persistent car journeys to retrace the steps Samantha took on the fateful night she disappeared. Juxtaposed by the silence that remains in Samantha's bedroom where everything remains in its place waiting on her return. Coupled with the contradictory comments of Samantha's best friend Kate that reveals a side to Samantha unknown to her parents. Charlotte's trust in Peter grows over the course of the interviews as she begins to feel more comfortable in the presence of the camera she finds the strength in herself to pack away her daughter's room and talk Peter through the guilt of feeling she has let her daughter down. When David discovers what Charlotte is doing tensions flare and Charlotte finally tells David how she feels begging for him to see her. Giving Charlotte a new found confidence as Peter finishes the documentary having gathered all of the information and footage he requires Charlotte also looks to new beginnings away from her collapsed marriage and the family home that remains trapped in the past. Having left what remained of the Lewis family in tatters, Peter's rough cut documentary premieres to his intended captive audience; Samantha who sits chained in his basement to a dirty mattress having been forced to see her family destroyed by the same man who stole her freedom. Matters are made worse when her mother turns up at Peter's front door looking to move forward in her new found friendship to find Peter is more than happy to welcome her into the very house that keeps her daughter a prisoner.
