  • Plot: Native Cairenes -- that's what people who lives in Cairo are called, I believe -- walk down a street, looking resentfully at the audience. The pallbearers pass by.It's hard enough to understand what emotion a trained actor is showing when seen on the screen. The Russian director/theoretician Lev Kuleshov cut in shots of Ivan Mouskejine amidst shots of food, a girl and a coffin and showed it to an audience and they spoke of his acting. The Kuleshov Effect referred to the power of editing and the insistence of the human mind on finding patterns: food, Mouskejine equals hunger; girl, Mouskejine equals lust; Coffin, Mouskejine equals sorrow.I see resentment in the mourners: why can't you leave us alone in this moment of sorrow? You don't share it, you just make it something to show on the screen. Is that me? Is that the mourners? Does it matter which?
