Most of his works deal with the lifestyle, tragedy, and struggle of the village people and the contemporary socio-cultural practices that prevailed in Bengal. He remains the most popular, translated, and adapted Indian author of all time. His works have been adapted in around fifty films in different South Asian languages. Particularly, his novel ‘Devdas’ (1917) has been adapted in sixteen different cinematic versions in languages including Bengali, Hindi, and Telugu. His novel ‘Parineeta’ (1914) has also been adapted thrice as Hindi language films.
